Exploring Your Options for Residential Water Heaters

Dan Wood Company • 11 November 2023

Imagine stepping into the shower, expecting a comforting stream of hot water, only to be greeted by an icy blast! An efficient water heater is the unsung hero in our homes, providing us with warm baths, clean dishes, and sanitized clothes. But what happens when it's time to choose a new one? Let's dive into the world of residential storage tanks and tankless water heaters to help you find the best fit for your home.

Storage Tank Water Heaters

The classic storage tank water heater is perhaps the most common type you might visualize when thinking about water heaters. Essentially, these heaters use a large tank to store and heat water, ensuring that hot water is always ready and waiting.

Pros: Simplicity and Affordability Rolled into One

When it comes to storage tank water heaters, one cannot help but appreciate their straightforwardness and accessibility. Their ease of use is one of their shining aspects—they typically don't come with a steep learning curve and even the installation process is notably less intricate than their modern counterparts.

From a financial standpoint, storage tank water heaters tend to be more pocket-friendly, at least when discussing initial costs. They don't demand a hefty investment to purchase or set up, making them a universally viable option for a vast array of households, particularly those mindful of sticking to a budget.

Cons: Bulkiness and Slow Hot Water Recovery

However, as with any appliance, storage tank water heaters come with their own set of challenges. Firstly, their physical bulk can be a major drawback, especially for homes with limited space. The large tanks, while ensuring a steady hot water supply, can also become an inconvenient obstacle, often demanding a dedicated area or room.

Once the stored hot water is depleted—perhaps after a particularly long bath—the recovery time (the time it takes for the water to heat up again) can be quite significant, potentially leading to unpleasantly chilly surprises in the shower. Balancing the immediate affordability and easy use against these downsides becomes a pivotal point of consideration for homeowners pondering about opting for storage tank water heaters.

Tankless Water Heaters

Unlike their tank counterparts, tankless water heaters, sometimes referred to as "on-demand" heaters, provide hot water only when it's needed. This means they don't store hot water and, therefore, save space and potentially lower ongoing energy costs.

Pros: An Energy-Efficient and Compact Choice

Since the tankless water heater is only activated during use, you're not expending energy to maintain a tank of hot water, making these models notably energy-efficient. Furthermore, tankless heaters boast a compact design that can be a game-changer for homes where space is a premium. Their small size not only saves valuable space but also offers versatile installation options, which can be particularly advantageous in preserving indoor space and maintaining aesthetic appeal.

Cons: The Cost and Capacity Dilemma

While tankless water heaters sparkle with their efficient and space-saving attributes, they bring along a set of challenges that are crucial to consider. The initial installation of a tankless system can be notably pricier compared to its traditional tank counterparts, potentially straining upfront budgets. In some cases, adapting a home's existing infrastructure to accommodate a tankless system might invoke additional costs, as certain modifications may be necessary to ensure compatibility and safety.

In addition to the financial aspect, it's vital to discuss the capacity of tankless water heaters. While they do provide an uninterrupted hot water supply, their ability to manage multiple hot water-utilizing activities concurrently can be restricted. For instance, if someone is taking a hot shower, running the dishwasher simultaneously might overwhelm the system, forcing homeowners to strategize their hot water usage. Larger, even pricier units can handle multiple demands at once.
